Societies do not live on but are part of a planet. As the planet is ever-changing, so too are the relations societies create with it.

The planetary

How should societies deal with planetary forces beyond human control, from induced seismicity to space weather?

Time

Human societies increasingly interact with processes on geological or even cosmic timescales. How can planetary temporalities be institutionalized politically?

Democracy

Some democracies deal with planetary change better than others. What would a democracy look like that includes nonhuman earthlings?

Frederic Hanusch is Professor of Planetary Change and Politics at Justus Liebig University Giessen, Germany. He is co-founder of the university's Panel on Planetary Thinking and co-convener of the Earth System Governance Project's Working Group on Democracy. He was recently appointed to the British Academy and Carnegie Endowment for International Peace working group on Transnational and Planetary Challenges.
